Kurinuki Basics | 1-Day Workshop – FULL

  • Wellington Potters Association 130 Grant Road Thorndon New Zealand (map)

Fancy some meditative carving to create beautiful kurinuki objects?

Kurinuki is a Japanese term referring to the handbuilding technique of starting with a solid block of clay and hollowing it out to create an interior. This one-day workshop provides students with the basics of the technique to create an open teabowl and a lidded vessel.

No experience is required – just bring some trimming and texturing tools and lots of patience for carving. Clay will be provided — take all your trimmings home (there will be plenty)!

By the end of the day, you will have largely completed your two items however some refinement may be required in your own time.

Bisque and glaze firing is the responsibility of the students, however clay will be provided. A list of trimming tools to bring to class will be emailed to students the week before class.

Note: the class requires a LOT of carving so this may not suit people with repetitive strain / wrist / hand issues.
