Mugs with handles and Jars with lids 6 July

This is not a course for beginners, you need to be comfortable using the wheels and equipment to produce basic pots.

This course is for members with some experience of throwing who can produce the necessary basic shapes. The course will concentrate on:

  • techniques for making and attaching handles to mugs and cups
  • techniques for making jars with well fitting lids.

You will make one or more cups/mugs and jars.

Session 1
Throwing a mug or cup

Session 2
Trimming and an introduction to the various types of handle making techniques.

Session 3
Throwing a jar and introduction to the various types of lid making techniques

Session 4
Trimming the jar and lids – Introduction of trimming techniques especially for making a lid on a clay hump. Making knobs for the lids and attaching them.


Participants to provide

  • Mid fire throwing clay of your choice
  • Your preferred throwing and trimming tools

Number of participants

The course is limited to a maximum of 6 participants and needs a minimum of 4 participants to go-ahead.

The course will be over four sessions held in the upstairs room.

  • Tuesday 6 July 6:00pm – 8:30pm
  • Tuesday 13 July 6:00pm – 8:30pm
  • Tuesday 20 July 6:00pm – 8:30pm
  • Tuesday 27 July 6:00pm – 8:30pm


The fee for this course is $209.

The not so small print

There can be no refunds after you have been registered on the course and paid the fee. Should you find that you can’t make the course you are allowed to find a suitably experienced substitute.

If you miss a session the tutors are not expected to provide any catch-up time beyond that which can be given in the scheduled times without impacting other participants.

Before confirming your registration the tutors may contact you to make sure that you understand the prerequisite skills required. If the courses that is not advertised as suitable for beginners there will be no time to assist participants without the skill to work with the amount of clay specified.

The fee for the course does not include firing or glazing that can be done through the normal club process.
